gymnastics moves

Im going to adult gymnastics classes twice a week. i have no gymnastics background. id like to work hard and get some basic proficiency. what are some good basic moves i should work on? what are the squat, bench and Deadlift of gymnastics?

i was looking at doing a plaunch, tumbling on the floor w/ out the spring board or trampleline, and some things on the ring, bu im not wure what i should be looking at to do for the rings other than a muscle up (which are way harder on the rings than on the bar i can do them till im blue in the face on the bar but not on the rings) and an iron cross.

so give me some specific things i can work on.

Josh, each apparatus has its

Josh, each apparatus has its basic skills. But there are indeed some basic skills that are basic to all of the events too. The USA Gymnastics progressions for each apparatus are well known, and can be accessed at http://www2.usa-gymnastics.org/education/index.html.

For my money, some of the simple skills that are vital for any gymnast are as follows:

handstand
cartwheel and variations
back handspring
front handspring
ability to do lots of chinups, dips, etc.
kip up (on all apparatuses, including floor)

I'm sure there are about a dozen more...

An iron cross and a planche?

An iron cross and a planche? Those are some lofty goals. Good luck with that. I'm not sure how you're built, but if you have a decent sized lower body or long arms those will be tough (it's all about levers, strength and bodyweight) . Not everyone can be Fred Hatfield.

Dr Squat has a good list of elements.

My basic advice would be to get on your hands as much as you can. The more comfortable you are in the handstand position the easier gymnastics will be. If you can't do a rock solid handstand easily, then gymnastics will be tough.
